[virtualbox] Virtualbox – create shared folder error

Virtualbox – create shared folder error

The objective is to create the shared folder between the host and the guest machine.

Background:

Host machine: Windows7
Guest machine: Ubuntu 12.04 Server
Virtualbox version: 4.3.18

As it is said, it’s easy to create a shared folder in virtualbox. The normal steps (in my case) are:

  1. Create a shared folder in the host machine (here is windows7), I called it partage (share in French)
  1. Add the shared folder to virtualbox, easy to do, in virtualbox, configurations, then shared folder, then add, then etc.(as in the photo)

vm3

  1. In the guest machine (here is Ubuntu 12.04), install the virtualbox guest additions.
  • Insert the ISO (you can find it where your installed your virtualbox) to the vm
  • In terminal,
    • Go to folder by typing the command: cd /media/VBOXADDITIONS_4.3.18_96516
    • Execute with root the vm addition tool: sudo ./VBoxLinuxAdditions.run
  • Give the shared folder to mount point by typing: sudo mount –t vboxsf partage /mnt/share_windows (you can specify your own share_windows), your shared folder will be created, I mean normally

Attention! If here you have the same error like me, continue read the blog

vm1

  • If the error displays : /sbin/mount.vboxsf: mounting failed with the error: No such device, do the following commands (ref from stackoverflow):
    • sudo apt-get install dkms
    • sudo /etc/init.d/vboxadd setup

vm2

Hope it helps.
